What does a home session look like? In general, you can expect the following:
Each therapist arrives for the session, greets caregivers and learner, reviews the progress the child made since the last visit, and prepares the environment and materials. The therapist will then work and play with your child, taking data as they go. About 15 minutes prior to the end of the session, the therapist will wrap things up by cleaning up, taking final notes, and entering final data into the website. They will collect your signature before leaving the home.
What insurance carriers does SVABA work with? SVABA currently works with Kaiser Permanente, Santa Clara Family Health Plan, Valley Health Plan, Optus, Anthem, and Aetna. If your current insurance carrier is not listed here, you can contact our main office line for more information.
I want ABA services in the home setting, but I also work full time. What do I do? Services can be held in the home with a family member or any responsible adult over the age of 18. Talk about your schedule with your case manager during assessment to determine what options are available to you.
Can services be provided in the community? Yes! A responsible adult will need to be present, but if community-based services are a clinically appropriate setting, this can be arranged.
Can services be held at school? Absolutely. However, this must be arranged with the school. Many school districts have major restrictions on whom they allow on campus, and many have internal ABA staff. It can be challenging to arrange, and is sometimes not possible due to the school policies in place.
Can services be held at a daycare or private preschool? Yes. As long as we have the approval of the teachers and administration of the organization, we can arrange for sessions to be held at a daycare or preschool
How long will it take for services to get started? It can take 1-3 months for direct services to get started after SVABA receives the referral for assessment.
How long does the assessment take? Assessment takes about 1 month. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will contact you to arrange a time to conduct an interview, observation, and direct assessment. The BCBA will then write an assessment report to summarize findings, create goals, and recommend services. The BCBA will review these recommendations with you and submit it to the funding source if applicable. Once an authorization is received, the BCBA will be in touch to schedule a debrief and the first sessions.
Is ABA a cure for autism? No. There is no “cure” for autism, nor do we at SVABA believe there should be. A person with autism thinks differently than people who are not diagnosed with autism. This is not a bad thing. People likeSteve Jobs, Tim Burton, and Temple Grandin have made exceptional contributions to the world because they see the world differently. Even historical figures such as Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Thomas Jefferson and Sir Isaac Newton have been identified as exhibiting characteristics of autism before the diagnosis was officially recognized. What would the world have become without people who think in different ways? The bottom line is this. At SVABA we believe that we can help individuals understand the world and other people around them so they can be as successful as possible. Our job is not to help learners conform to what society expects of them, but to adapt, and live and thrive within it in their own way.
